It isn't every day when you look at the roadways across Houston and you don't see more than a few cars.

But as the city experienced a winter storm and roadways began to ice over thanks to freezing rain, the area was seemingly shut down on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018.

Schools canceled classes. Businesses closed for the day or sent their employees home early, the frigid temperatures dropped into the 20s and as the frozen rain continued to fall, more ice formed on overpasses and roads.

Officials told citizens to stay home if they can help it and many listened, which caused Houston's typically congested roads to be frighteningly abandoned.

Those who ventured out experienced a sight Houston rarely sees - anti-freeze trucks out working to deice the roads, uncongested highways and closed overpasses due to ice.

Thanks to TXDOT cameras placed throughout Houston-area roadways, citizens are able to get a glimpse into just how abandoned the city's freeways are due to the icy conditions.
