A northern Michigan woman facing charges in the 2016 death of her infant daughter was convicted nearly seven years ago after another daughter died while taking a bath with her in Oklahoma.
The Petoskey News-Review reports the Lisa Rae Bryan’s first child, Hannah, was less than 2 months old when she died in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2010.
Bryan was convicted of second-degree manslaughter the following year. According to WPBN, she was sentenced to four years but served just over a year in prison.
Bryan now faces a Jan. 31 preliminary hearing in Michigan on second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and other charges in Emmet County in connection with the 2016 death.
The Petoskey News-Review reported last week that police said the 32-year-old Bryan told investigators she’d tried to feed her daughter, Isabella, and awoke to find the infant’s face “smashed against her breast.” The child was less than a month old.
Isabella was born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome or narcotic withdrawal.
Hospital staff reported Bryan was “exhibiting typical signs of drug use such as being lethargic, drowsy, scatterbrained, fidgety, and having dry mouth.”
Hospital staff reported removing Isabella from Bryan's care on multiple occasions because she was falling asleep or caring for the baby in an unsafe manner.
The infant died 36 hours after being discharged from the hospital.
Sheriff Peter Wallin said cases like this one are difficult.
“Unfortunately, a young infant was tragically killed and what will happen now is it will be up to the judicial system to determine the outcome of this case," Wallin said.
