WATCH: Why Pat Shurmur's tenure with the Browns shouldn't be a concern for Giants

Pat Shurmur failed as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. Join the club.

Shurmur, who is expected to be hired as the Giants' head coach after the Vikings' season ends, was the Browns' head coach from 2011-12. He posted a 9-23 record over those two seasons, which would be cause for a parade nowadays. No, really. Browns fans just held a parade after the team went 0-16 this season. Nine wins in two seasons may earn Shurmur a statue outside of FirstEnergy Stadium.

While we exaggerate slightly, the bottom line is that the deck was stacked against Shurmur in Cleveland. His first offseason was shortened by the lockout and he was fired after his second season by new owners.

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is considered a hot head coaching candidate, with many supporters pointing to the lessons he learned from a failed stint as the Broncos' head coach from 2009-10. Yet no one seems to point to the same lessons Shurmur likely learned from his time in Cleveland.

The 52-year-old Shurmur has been a successful coordinator and assistant for multiple teams throughout a 19-year NFL coaching career. His name may not generate the same type of buzz as the Patriots' hotshot coordinators, but Shurmur represents a safe hire for the Giants after the inexperienced Ben McAdoo was a disaster.

Watch the video above for my take on why Shurmur's tenure in Cleveland shouldn't be a concern for the Giants.
