Shock Brexit poll: MAJORITY support second EU referendum if Theresa May gets 'no deal'

A SECOND EU referendum has been backed by the majority of the public if Theresa May walks away from Brexit negotiations with “no deal”, a new poll has revealed.

Another referendum into EU could be held

Fears of a fresh fight for Brexit have risen in recent days as prominent Leave campaigners have appeared to become resigned to the fact that another vote will be the only way to silence Remoaners.

Now, a poll by BMG Research has found that 57 per cent of people say they would support a second referendum if Theresa May failed to secure a deal with Brussels bureaucrats.

Parliament will vote on the final deal agreed between the EU and the Government.

But if they reject the deal, the UK could end up leaving the EU without a deal by default.

It means MPs, the majority of whom campaigned to remain during the 2016 referendum, could vote down any agreement reached on the UK’s divorce from the trade bloc in the hope of forcing a fresh vote.

Josiah Mortimer, editor of Left Foot Forward who commissioned the poll, said: “The question must be addressed as to what happens if May fails to secure a deal.

“There is growing momentum for going back to the public – but whether that will happen depends on the verdict in Westminster.”

Downing Street has repeatedly ruled out another vote on the matter during the divorce process.

Mr Mortimer continued: “This will make uncomfortable reading for both Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn.

"If the PM fails to secure a proper deal with the EU, most voters with a view want a fresh in/out referendum on our membership.

“That idea would not have been conceivable a year ago – showing just how much the debate has shifted.”

Last week former Ukip leader Nigel Farage shocked the UK when he announced he thought a fresh vote on the EU may be necessar

He said: “We have to be prepared.”

The Brexit pioneer claimed a second vote would see an even bigger majority for the Leave campaign and silence the “whingeing” of Remainers for a generation.

In a TV interview he said: “What is for certain is that the Cleggs, the Blairs, the Adonises will never give up.

“They will go on whingeing and whining and moaning all the way through this process.

“So maybe, just maybe, I’m reaching the point of thinking that we should have a second referendum.

“I think that if we had a second referendum on EU membership we would kill it off for a generation.”

Arron Banks, a former Ukip donor and close ally of Mr Farage, has also called for a second referendum to go ahead.

“True Brexiteers have been backed into a corner and the only option now is to go back to the polls and let the people shout from the rooftops their support of a true Brexit,” Mr Banks said.

The Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was another Leave campaigner said to be expecting a new referendum.

He was believed to have told friends Brexit is far from sealed and Leavers still faced a huge fight.

However, he has since dismissed having concerns and said he doesn’t believe the UK will end up stuck in the restrictive trade bloc.

He said: “I genuinely don't think that will happen in this case.

“I think that something very profound has happened in the UK.

“And I think actually were there to be - I don't think there should be a second referendum - I think the result would be pretty much the same, or the result would be more heavy for leave, I really do.”

Prominent Brexiteers vocally expressing their support for another referendum, coupled with the new poll from BMG Research indicating there is support from the public for such a ballot means a second referendum may soon be on the cards.

A representative sample of 1,513 UK adults were asked questions online by BMG Research between 9th & 12th January.
