DHAKA: The High Court has fixed Wednesday (January 17) for delivering the verdict on its rule over the election of Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU).

An HC bench of Justices Sayed Mohammad Dastagir Hossain and Md Ataur Rahman fixed the date on Tuesday (January 16) after concluding hearing on the rule.

Lawyer Manzil Morshed confirmed the matter to Banglanews.

Earlier on march 11 in 2012, Advocate Manzil Morshed, on behalf of 31 DU students, sent a legal notice to DU vice-chancellor, proctor and treasurer for taking action on DUCSU polls. After getting no response from DU authorities, a writ petition was filed with the High Court later in that year.

On April 8, The High Court issued a rule asking authorities concerned to explain why their inaction to hold DUCSU polls should not be declared illegal.

The Education secretary, DU vice-chancellor, Treasurer and Proctor were made respondents to the rule. The hearing ended on Tuesday (January 16).

Lawyer Manzil Morshed moved for the writ while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam moved for the state.

According to the writ, DUCSU election should be held one in every year as per provision. However, the last election was held in July 6 in 1990 and DU authorities did not take any action to hold the election. Because of that, thousands of students have been deprived of their democratic rights.
