Man arrested on attempted murder

FORT MADISON — A 27-year-old man was arrested on attempted murder charges early Sunday in connection with a shooting last October on U.S. 61 north of Fort Madison.

Tourmaria "Whammy" Baynes, who told police he was homeless, was arrested shortly after 1 a.m. at Sidelines Sports Bar in Fort Madison on an outstanding warrant charging him with attempted murder and intimidation with a dangerous weapon.

Lee County District Associate Judge Ty Rogers set Baynes' bond at $50,000 cash only on the attempted murder warrant, according to North Lee County District Court records. Baynes remained in custody late Monday at the Lee County jail.

He was charged with firing at least one round into a vehicle that was northbound in the 2200 block of U.S. 61, said Lee County Sheriff Stacy Weber.

No one was injured in the shooting, which occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Oct. 20, Weber said.

A bullet was found lodged in the car, directly behind the driver's side window, he said.

"He (Baynes) apparently had a beef with a passenger in the vehicle," Weber said, declining to go into specific detail regarding the shooting.

Fort Madison Police Chief Tim Sittig said Monday members of his department arrested Baynes after discovering him at the bar early Sunday.

"I don't know much about the case," Sittig said Monday. "All we basically did was arrest him on the warrant."

During Baynes' arrest, police located marijuana in his possession. In addition to the attempted murder and weapons charges, Baynes also was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

If convicted of the attempted murder charge, Baynes faces up to 25 years in prison.
