Honoring Fallen Fire Fighter Lt. Matthew LeTourneau

Friday was not a pretty day in Delaware County. It was a pretty dismal day and those sentiments became clearer as I approached the Route 320 overpass that looks over the Blue Route.

Here the Swarthmore Fire Company and the Garden City Fire Company of Nether Providence joined ladders to display the American Flag to pay tribute to
Lt. Matthew LeTourneau, a Philadelphia Firefighter that lost his life in the line of duty.

A representative crew stood for each of these fire stations out in the elements awaiting the passing below of the funeral procession of a fallen comrade.

On duty 24/7, one of the trucks had to take an emergency call and leave, as fellow crewman directed the traffic.

Southbound Interstate 95 and portions of the Blue Route were closed down in out of respect and in anticipation of the volume of cars heading from the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia to Saint Peter and Paul Cemetery in Springfield the final resting place of this heroic citizen.

Stationed at the next overpass along the Blue Route was the Rose Tree Fire Company of Upper Providence, Delaware County along with the West Grove Fire Company of Chester County

In all conditions these men and women make themselves available and charge into the most dangerous conditions without a second thought.

It was humbling for me to stand on that same bridge on Plush Mill Road in Nether Providence with these men and women that I know I don't normally stop to pause and think about in gratitude for putting their lives on the line.

West Grove Fire Company

As they stood out in the elements to honor one of their own, as a community and a Brotherhood, it was emotional and moving to witness.

 Rose Tree Fire Company

A flag flies half-mast at the Garden City Fire Company in Nether Providence honoring the heroic brother, Lt. Matthew LeTourneau, a Philadelphia Firefighter from Springfield, Delaware County.

Thank you to all the men and women who unselfishly serve our community.
