Mines students volunteer for MLK Service Day

Several student groups from the School of Mines spent their day off serving others during the MLK Day of Service.

This is the eighth year the students were collecting food and cash donations for the shelves at Feeding South Dakota and the South Dakota Mines student food pantry.

They were at several grocery stores throughout the city until 6:30 this evening.

They do it for several reasons.

Joseph Updike, Mines Junior, says "It's a really, really great opportunity to give to the community as well as honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King who as we all know had a dream of citizenship and giving back to the community. It's also really important to know that at the end of the day because of your efforts someone may be having a meal at night and so that's a really important factor in it for me."

So far, Mines students have collected 3,780 pounds of food and $750. They are still collecting at a basketball game and will have the final total tomorrow.

Some of the groups out today were several engineering societies, fraternities and athlete groups.
