The Top 10 AirBnB locations in South Dakota for 2017 Wochit
Your own home is the growth area for the hospitality business in South Dakota.
Data released by AirBnB this week shows a 141 percent increase in rentals booked in the state through the company’s website and apps.
More than 41,000 people booked a stay in 2017, mostly in locations scattered throughout the Black Hills. In 2016, the figure was 17,000 visitors.
Rapid City saw the most bookings, with 11,500 bookings worth $1.2 million to their hosts. Sioux Falls was the second-most popular destination and the only East River location in the top 10, with 7,000 bookings and $445,000 in revenue.
The data from 2017 also shows that 65 percent of hosts are female and an out-sized group – 24 percent – are older than 60. In North Dakota, just 13 percent of the hosts are 60 or older.

Another major difference between 2016 and 2017 is regulatory in nature.
The company began asking hosts to collect and remit sales tax last September, less than a month after the city of Sioux Falls updated its rental registration ordinance to make room for short-term rentals.
Until then, Sioux Falls hosts were technically required to apply for a conditional use permit to host guests at their home. The new rules require registration, but it’s free to sign up online.

That’s not the case in every jurisdiction, however. Minnehaha County, for example, still requires a $250 conditional use permit for anyone who wants to host visitors for extra income.
