State representative George McGill (D-Fort Smith) has endorsed a candidate for his seat as his third and final term comes to an end, according to a news release.

McGill, who announced in September his intent to run for Fort Smith mayor, has endorsed candidate Jay Richardson, D-Fort Smith, for the Arkansas House of Representatives, District 78 spot, which includes a portion of Sebastian County.

“Jay has worked well in the corporate environment and legislature is similar. He is willing to learn and will represent Fort Smith well. Jay will elevate to a statesman and will not yield to special interests. His focus is for helping the people of District 78 by making honest assessments and taking appropriate action to get the job done," McGill said in the news release.

Richardson, 46, is a business consultant with Centuria Ventures, a private equity group managing economic development and local investments. He is also on the school board at Future School of Fort Smith.

Richardson will host the first of three roundtable discussions where he will address economic development, health care and education from 6-7:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at Unity Baptist Church.

Election Day is Nov. 6.
