GREENSBORO — The Asheboro High School boys varsity basketball team was reintroduced to an old foe Monday in the Rodney Clark Invitational.
Western Guilford was the opposition, the same Western Guilford that has been in the Blue Comets’ conference until the most recent realignment.
The Blue Comets were happy to see the Broncos again as AHS posted a low-scoring 41-36 victory.
The Blue Comets (7-9) used a strong middle two quarters — a 29-11 advantage — to take control and that allowed AHS to win despite being outscored 16-5 in the final eight minutes.
“Defensively, we played well, especially through three quarters,” AHS coach Brian Nance said of his team, which led 36-20 heading into the final eight minutes. “They did a lot of their damage at the very end when we turned the ball over trying to run the clock out.”
A 15-4 advantage in the third quarter broke open a 21-16 lead at the break for AHS.
“They were getting a lot of second chances in the first half and we eliminated that in the third quarter,” Nance said. “They just didn’t have any perimeter players at the time, so we went into a zone. We did a great job on the boards.”
Tysean Freshwater led the Blue Comets with nine points. Nate Fisher added eight points and Will Clauser chipped in eight. Cory Durrant and Devingston Lewis had six points each for the Blue Comets.
