Mother Nature smiled on the Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza. "It's almost a perfect year," said Bob Slaybaugh, publicity director. Ice was the main concern, but the 12 inches of ice two weeks ago has been supplemented by a recent cold snap.

30 years ago (1988)

Brainerd attorney Jack Graham has asked for a mistrial or new trial in a case heard in Duluth and brought by the Stockman family. In addition, he asked for an investigation into the conduct of all attorneys, including himself, and to strike from the record the entire closing argument of defense counsel.

40 years ago (1978)

A strong performance by freestyler Mike Abrahamson led the Warriors to a fourth place finish at the Cambridge Invitational Swim Meet. Abrahamson had his best time of the season in the 200 free at 1:56.2 and dropped his time in the 500 free by 12 seconds with a 5:16.5.

60 years ago (1958)

With John Emerson regaining his shooting eye for 30 points, his best output of this season, the Warriors took their 7th victory of the season, 83-69 over Wadena. Forward Steve Jelacic and guard Jimmy Brown chipped in with 18 points apiece.

80 years ago (1938)

Controlling the ball two-thirds of the time, C-I took advantage of every Brainerd fumble and bad pass to trim the Warriors 35-22 on the Brainerd court. The Rangers were accurate from all over the floor while Brainerd nervously missed shot after shot.

100 years ago (1918)

Happiness reigns in a Brainerd family, reunited after nine years. Mrs. Jacob Borkon and two children were swept into Russia by the advance of German troops. They walked to Moscow, escaped the Bolshevik revolution via a 30-day train trip across Russia, and crossed the Pacific by ship.
