Manchester City news: Ilkay Gundogan insists first loss won't destabilise title bid

ILKAY GUNDOGAN insists Manchester City’s first Premier League defeat of the season will not destabilise their march towards the title.

The German midfielder says Pep Guardiola’s team will absorb the lessons of a crazy 10-minute spell when they conceded three goals from their own mistakes in the 4-3 thriller against Liverpool.

And Gundogan expects City, who still hold a healthy lead at the top of the table, to bounce back to winning ways against Newcastle at the Etihad on Saturday.

The midfielder said: “It is in our own hands. There is a quite comfortable gap still but, of course, there are still a lot of games to play. We need to learn from that 10 minutes but I am quite sure we will bounce back and it will be nearly impossible to stop us.

“We need to accept it even though it is not easy. Unfortunately, 10 minutes were enough for Liverpool to win the game.

“We conceded three goals through our own errors. It was not necessary. The good thing is that we tried, even in that period, to play our football but unfortunately we were not 100 per cent there.

“It is a shame because I don’t think we played badly. After conceding the first goal, we dominated the first half and even more in the beginning of the second half. But the second goal changed the game.

“The manager said it was nearly impossible to go through the season unbeaten and that the day would come when we would lose. He wasn’t unhappy with our reaction after those three goals in 10 minutes. It says a lot about our mentality that we still ran, still pushed ourselves and pulled two goals back.

“We didn’t feel as if we deserved to lose so it feels kind of weird. But the day has come, we need to deal with it and look forward to Newcastle.”

Guardiola is set to step up his search for a new defender with Fabian Delph facing several weeks out after injuring his knee at Anfield. It means Manchester City are without two left-backs because Benjamin Mendy is out until April as he recovers from knee ligament damage.

Brazilian Danilo did not look comfortable after coming on for Delph while youngster Olex Zinchenko is still too inexperienced in the position.
