The No. 4 Class AA Brandon Valley girls’ basketball team extended its winning streak to three games with a 54-46 win Monday, Jan. 8, over Sioux Falls Roosevelt.
The Rough Riders (1-7 overall) jumped out to a 14-9 first-quarter lead and had a 25-21 advantage at halftime.
“Roosevelt is a team that is better than their record,” said Brandon Valley coach Mark Stadem. “They are very well coached and make you play solid defense for the entire shot clock. If you make a mistake, they will make you pay. They came out with a lot more energy than we did and hit us in the mouth.”
However, the Lynx (6-1 overall) responded by outscoring Roosevelt 20-11 in the third quarter and extending their lead by three more points in the final stanza.
“We had to gather ourselves, and the girls did a good job of making a run and closing the gap right before halftime,” Stadem said. “In the second half, we did a great job of moving the ball on offense, and a much better job of communicating on defense and boxing to finish the possessions.”
Three players scored in double figures for Brandon Valley: Danica Kocer was 2 of 3 from 3-point land and led the team with 17 points. Ashley Wells and Trinity Law each scored 11.
Ashley Wells also had team highs in rebounds, eight, and steals, three.
Kocer and Law led the Lynx with three assists each.
Also scoring for Brandon Valley was Felicity Klinkhammer with five points; Lexi Ellingson, four; and Lauren Wells, Hannah Behrens and Sam Taylor, two each.
The score from Brandon Valley’s game Saturday, Jan. 13, against No. 5 Sioux Falls Lincoln (7-2 overall) will be in the Jan. 24 edition of the Challenger. The Martin Luther King holiday bumped the press deadline up from Jan. 15 to Jan. 12.
After Lincoln, the Lynx will play Friday, Jan. 19, against No. 1 Rapid City Stevens (8-0 overall) at Sioux Falls Roosevelt.
