Will ask commercial establishments to allow customers, public to use their washrooms

With Mysuru eyeing the top ‘Swachh’ rank this year, all efforts are being made to mobilise citizen support and come up with plans for this to materialise.

The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has stepped up its Swachh campaign and is also looking for new ways to prop up the city’s image.

After persuading petroleum dealers to allow toilets in outlets for public use, the MCC will now try to persuade commercial establishments to allow their customers and the public to use their washroom to end public urination.

MCC Commissioner G. Jagadeesha told The Hindu that the petroleum dealers’ association in Mysuru responded positively to the MCC’s request and had told its members to allow their customers and public to use toilets if necessary.

“I am also planning to mobilise support of the commercial and business establishments in the MCC’s limits to follow suit,” he replied.

The commissioner said the MCC was also mulling over making it mandatory while issuing licences for commercial buildings to compulsorily build toilets.

It becomes tough for people to get pay and use toilets in the commercial hubs. The shops can as well volunteer to allow their customers to use their toilets. By this way, they contribute in the clean city campaign, he explained.

Mr. Jagadeesha said he will ask the officers from the MCC’s Health Department to visit hotels and restaurants and issue directions for proper maintenance of toilets for use by their customers.

“In most places, men end up urinating in public unable to get urinals in public spaces. With toilets made available for their use, it will help overcome the nuisance in future though efforts are on to build toilets in public places,” he said.

A petroleum dealer on Dhanwantri Road said toilets in his bunk are already being used by their customers and tourists as it is located in city centre.

But the public should ensure toilets are kept clean after so that the purpose was served. Many foreign tourists request us for using toilets and we oblige. The idea is acceptable, he added.
