The Nerul police on Monday registered a case against Shreyansh Behati (21), who died in an accident at Palm Beach Road on Sunday.
The case was registered after his friend Jessica Joseph, who survived the accident with severe injuries, gave a statement to police on Monday. “Ms. Joseph was not in a condition to give a statement on Sunday, and hence we could not register a case. We were not sure about who was driving the car. After Ms. Jospeh told us that the car was being driven by Behati, we registered a case against him,” Senior Police Inspector Ashok Rajput said.
Meanwhile, Ms. Joseph is said to be in trauma and is still unaware about the death of her friend. Around 11.30 a.m. on Sunday, the SUV being driven by Behati, a third-year engineering student, crashed into an electricity pole at Palm Beach Road in Nerul. “The car was speeding, and the driver lost control. The speedometer stopped at 120 km, and we suspect that was the speed at which the car was being driven. The impact was so severe that the engine was thrown out at a distance of 50m,” Assistant Police Inspector Nandakumar Kadam, Seawood unit, said.
Ms. Joseph, an LLB student, was a Behati’s classmate when she was earlier enrolled for an engineering course. The Vashi residents had gone to Belapur to drop Behati’s mother and were on their way back to Vashi, Mr. Rajput said.
“Ms. Joseph has fractured her leg, hand and cheekbone, but her condition is now stable. She will have to undergo surgery in coming days,” said Mr. Rajput.
