DARIEN – A 26-year-old woman was arrested early Monday after driving the wrong way on Interstate 95 and crashing into a state police cruiser.

Dispatchers at Troop G in Bridgeport received numerous calls of an Audi A3 driving the wrong way near Exit 6 in Stamford.

Using state Department of Transportation cameras, police saw the Audi speeding, heading northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway and swerving between the left of center lanes. It nearly caused numerous crashes, state police said.

Trooper Eduardo Santiago approached the Audi near Exit 12 and avoided a head-on collision. But the Audi sideswiped his cruiser, causing disabling damage to both vehicles.

The driver of the Audi, Ashton Steen of Darien, told police she had consumed alcoholic beverages and that she believed she was in New Jersey, according to a report.

After failing field sobriety tests, she was charged with reckless endangerment, reckless driving, driving the wrong way and driving under the influence.

Steen was released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court in Stamford on Feb. 20.

Neither Santiago nor Steen was injured.
