RAMALLAH: A Palestinian was shot dead during clashes with Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank on Monday, Palestinian officials said.

Ahmed Saleem, 24, was shot in Jayyous near Qalqilya, close to the separation line between Israel and the West Bank, the health ministry said, with official Palestinian media saying the incident occurred during clashes.

Meanwhile, an Israeli military court ordered a Palestinian teenager arrested after a viral video showed her hitting two Israeli soldiers held in custody for at least another two days.

Ahed Tamimi, 16, was ordered to be detained until Wednesday to allow the court time to decide whether she should be allowed out on bail ahead of her trial.

Prosecutors are seeking to have her kept in custody until her trial ends.

Tamimi’s lawyer Gaby Lasky argued in court that her continued detention violates international conventions since she is a minor.

The teenager has been hailed as a hero by Palestinians who see her as bravely standing up to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank.

Tamimi has been charged with 12 counts including assault and could face a lengthy jail term if convicted.

The charges relate to events in the video and five other incidents. They include stone-throwing, incitement and making threats.

Her mother Nariman has also been arrested over the incident, as has her cousin Nour Tamimi, 20.

Nour Tamimi was released on bail on Jan.5 while Nariman Tamimi remains in custody.

Ahed Tamimi’s family says the Dec.15 incident that led to the arrests occurred in the yard of their home in Nabi Saleh, near Ramallah in the West Bank.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow “understands” the anger of Abbas.

“We completely understand the emotions the Palestinians currently have. For years they made concessions without receiving anything in return,” Lavrov said at an annual press conference in Moscow.

The Palestinian president railed at President Donald Trump in a fiery, two-hour-long speech on Sunday, saying “shame on you” for his treatment of the Palestinians and warning that he would have no problem rejecting what he suggested would be an unacceptable peace plan.

The speech by Mahmoud Abbas ratcheted up what has been more than a month of harsh rhetoric towards Trump since the president’s recognition of occupied Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Relations between Washington and the Palestinians have sunk to a new low, boding poorly for a peace plan the White House has promised to present.

Speaking to the Palestinian Central Council, a decision-making body, Abbas repeated the Palestinians’ opposition to Trump’s Jerusalem recognition and censured Trump for accusing the Palestinians of refusing to negotiate.

“He (Trump) said in a tweet: ‘We won’t give money to the Palestinians because they rejected the negotiations,’” Abbas said. “Shame on you. When did we reject the talks? Where is the negotiation that we rejected?”

Palestinian leaders met on Monday to plan a response to what they see as Trump’s attack on their long bid for statehood, after Abbas denounced White House peace efforts as the “slap of the century.”

The rare meeting of the Palestinian Central Council — a high-ranking arm of the Palestine Liberation Organisation — was called after Trump’s controversial Dec.6 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Abbas has said that by siding with the Israelis on a sensitive issue, the announcement had destroyed Trump’s credibility as a Mideast peace broker.

“We can say no to anyone if things are related to our fate and our people, and now we have said no to Trump,” he said. “We told him the deal of the century was the slap of the century. But we will slap back.” Abbas also said that the Palestinians have rejected a US request to halt payments to roughly 35,000 families of Palestinians killed and wounded in the conflict with Israel.
