Laughing stock

| | Chennai

Sir — This refers to the report, “Supreme judicial crisis grips India” (January 13). It is shocking and a matter of grave concern that four senior most judges of the Supreme Court came out in the open to complain against Dipak Misra, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) in a Press conference, especially called for this purpose. This is unprecedented in the history of free India and tells on the defective administration of both the judiciary and the ruling dispensation at the centre.

That the four senior most judges have launched a sharp attack on Chief Justice Dipak Misra; complained against his arrogant and autocratic functioning; and have recorded that the administration of the Supreme Court is not in order and many things that are less desirable have happened in the last few months, definitely makes one believe that all is not well with the functioning of the apex court.

Justice Chelameswar, the one in line to become the next CJI, who has even gone to the extent of saying that the question of impeachment of the Chief Justice could be decided by the public instead of refuting such a move, hit the nail on its head.

Not only the Chief Justice of India but also the BJP Government at the Centre owe an explanation to the people of this country for driving our judiciary to become a laughing stock in the eyes of the whole world.
