Manchester United are again being linked with Ronaldo, who is supposedly keen to quit Real Madrid for Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old is unhappy at the Bernabeu because he feels club president Florentino Perez has ‘betrayed’ him over a new contract.

Typically, United are mentioned as his preferred destination despite Cristiano Ronaldo turning down the chance to return in both 2013 and 2015 respectively.

And Spanish outlet Don Balon has confirmed that Jose Mourinho is not interested in bringing the Portugal international back.

Instead, Mourinho would rather sign his two Real team-mates Marco Asensio and Raphael Varane.

Asensio’s stock has risen in the past 12 months with the Spain international regarded as one of the best young players of his generation.

But Zinedine Zidane appears to think differently.

The Frenchman has regularly benched Asensio despite Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema struggling for form.

And, amid concerns Asensio is growing tired with life in Spain, Mourinho is ready to launch a swoop.

France defender Varane, meanwhile, is another one on his radar, Don Balon claim.

Mourinho actually signed the defender for Real during his own time in La Liga, beating Sir Alex Ferguson’s United to the player’s signature.

And he wants a reunion with his current crop of centre-backs experiencing mixed fortunes.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones remain steady, if not spectacular, options.

But Victor Lindelof has taken his time to settle and Marcos Rojo still appears jaded following his return from a serious knee injury.
