CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Graham McPhee scored two goals as No. 16 Boston College defeated the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team on Sunday, 5-2, in front of 5,094 fans at Conte Forum.
Freshman Benton Maass and junior Ara Nazarian each posted a goal for the Wildcats, during a day when senior goalie Danny Tirone set a program record by playing in his 113th career game.
The loss extended the Wildcats’ winless streak to seven games (six of them losses), and they now sit 9-11-2 (4-7-1 Hockey East).
BC opened the scoring at 14:08 of the first period. McPhee knocked in the puck from right in front of the net on the lower glove side of Tirone (24 saves) off a breakaway.
UNH got on the board at 18:27 as Maass sent a wrist shot from the left face-off circle to the upper glove side of Joseph Woll (20 saves) for a power-play goal. Senior Michael McNicholas and freshman Max Gildon added the assists.
But the first-place Eagles (11-9-3, 11-4 HE) would score the next three goals, starting early in the second period on a David Cotton one-timer. Four minutes later they scored on a one-time from New Hampshire native JD Dudek, and then from McPhee again.
The Wildcats cut the deficit to 4-2 late in the second period when Nazarian netted a low stick-side goal off a tipped pass from junior Marcus Vela and sophomore Anthony Wyse. But that was as close as they’d get.
Tirone passed Kevin Regan (2005-08) on the games-played list. Regan played in 112 games during a career that saw him lead the ‘Cats to a series of NCAA tournaments and earn the Walter Brown Award, given to the best American-born Division I player in New England, in 2008..
The Wildcats return to action for a two-game series next weekend at Maine.
