Moody senior wrestler Kacie Rodriguez continues to be nationally ranked in her division after winning the Russ Pederson Invitational, hosted by San Antonio Johnson last week.
The Trojans wrestler, is ranked No. 8 in the national girls rankings in the 200-pound division.
The rankings are produced by FloWrestling in conjunction with USA Wrestling and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum.
Rodriguez finished second at the Cy-Fair Invitational last week.
The senior opened the season ranked No. 7 in her weight class.
VETERANS MEMORIAL BOYS SOAR
With a loaded field in the Mira's Gulf Coast Classic, the Veterans Memorial boys soccer team finished undefeated in the tournament hosted by the CCISD.
The Eagles went 2-0-1 in Pool 1 and advanced to the Tournament Championship match against Edinburg Vela.
Veterans Memorial outlasted Vela 2-1 and Noah Wagner was named MVP of the match.
In the Gulf Coast Championship, Weslaco East beat Edinburg North on penalty kicks after the schools tied 1-1 in regulation.
In the girls division, Veterans Memorial, IWA and Flour Bluff all finished second in their pools.
30-5A SWIM MEET ON TAP
District 30-5A will get to test out the CCISD Natatorium renovations on Saturday when the 11 schools meet for their district championships.
The defending Region VIII-5A champion Flour Bluff boys and girls are again the favorites, although Veterans Memorial is slowly putting together a team to challenge the Hornets.
Coach Bryan Hutchinson's Hornets are led by Alex and Ammarie Wallett and Flour Bluff has also added strong reinforcements from its freshman class.
Nicole Soriano and Marcus Hernandez from Veterans Memorial are multi-event threats for the Eagles and Tuloso-Midway has a pair of strong contenders in the individual medley in Zoe Garcia and Eric Potter.
DISTRICT 30-5A GIRLS HOOPS SHOWDOWN
Tuesday produces the first meeting between state ranked South Zone challengers Flour Bluff and Veterans Memorial. The teams have lost seven combined games and look to be the class of District 30-5A.
The Hornets, behind Hayle Campbell, are aiming for a repeat Region IV title and the accompanying state berth that goes with it.
Victoria Arismendi's Eagles look to knock off Flour Bluff and follow the path laid by the Veterans Memorial boys basketball team. in earning a state tournament berth early in the school's athletic history.
NEVER TOO EARLY FOR BASEBALL
With the start of baseball practice less than two weeks away, Txhighschoolbaseball.com unveiled its preseason Top 20 in all classes and the Coastal Bend was well represented.
Defending Region IV-5A champion Moody debuted at No. 7, while regional finalist Ray will start the year at No. 13 in the 5A ranks.
State semifinalist Sinton opens at No. 4 in the state, while regional finalist Robstown is listed at No. 10 in Class 4A.
In Class 3A Bishop will begin the year at No. 6 and Falfurrias is ranked 12th after both schools made runs to the regional semifinals in 2017.
Riviera rounds out the teams garnering preseason mentions, as the Seahawks begin the season ranked 16th in Class 2A.

- Carroll's Adolfo Almanza won his division (152) at the Russ Pederson Wrestling Invitational.
- King's Mikayla Dockwiler won her division (119) at the Russ Pederson Wrestling Invitational.
- Veterans Memorial's Jacqueline Ghent won her division (128) at the Russ Pederson Wrestling Invitational.
