Minnesotans are preparing today to pay their final respects to Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey, who lost his long battle with cancer this week. Humphrey's body will be taken to the state Capitol in St. Paul to lie in state until noon tomorrow.

An estimated 350 persons drove snowmobiles into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area yesterday to protest the federal ban on snowmobiles in the wilderness area. About 15 people were ticketed by U.S. Forest Service officers for allegedly entering a restricted area.

The Duluth City Council this week approved agreements with five local contractors who can be called to clear sidewalks in front of homes of delinquent snow shovelers. Those contractors will charge from $18.95 and up, depending on the size of the job.

Superior Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues west will be closed soon so contractors can start building a tunnel from the Radisson Hotel to the library. The city is also considering a connection to the Depot and from there to Lake Superior Center.
