Sumlin will replace Rich Rodriguez, who was fired earlier this month. USA TODAY Sports reported that the Wildcats grew uncomfortable with the direction of the football program amid allegations of workplace misconduct. Rodriguez said in a statement released through his attorney that the university had investigated claims of harassment by a former administrative assistant, who threatened a $7.5 million lawsuit.
Sumlin was fired by the Aggies in November after six seasons at the helm. The 53-year-old, who also spent four seasons as the coach at Houston, has amassed a career record of 86-43 as a head coach.
Arizona was believed to be targeting Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo for its vacancy, but The Arizona Daily Star confirmed Sunday that Niumatalolo would stay at Navy.
Sumlin will inherit a Wildcats team led by rising junior quarterback Khalil Tate, who threw for 1,591 yards and ran for 1,411 more as a sophomore in 2017.
