An arctic cold front will move through the Golden Triangle Tuesday morning and officials have placed the region under a winter storm watch.
Meteorologist Daniel Lamb, of the National Weather Service office in Jackson, said an arctic cold front will move into the area late Monday and early Tuesday morning, bringing freezing temperatures.
"Overnight and in the early morning hours we expect light snow to develop through the Golden Triangle in the morning and tapering off in the early afternoon hours," Lamb said.
Lamb said around one inch of accumulation is expected.
The high for Tuesday is expected to be 27 degrees, with a wind chill in the teens that will continue to fall throughout the day. The temperature will fall Tuesday night into the teens with a wind chill near 0 degrees.
"Because it is going to be so cold, we will see the snow stick more readily, and we may see some travel issues on bridges, overpasses and elevated roadways," Lamb said.
Along with icy roads, Lamb said it is important to check on any neighbors, such as the elderly, who may be especially vulnerable to the cold and ensure they have a way to stay warm. Pets should also be given sufficient shelter, Lamb said, and pet owners should make sure animals' water source doesn't freeze.
"Because of the last cold outbreak that came through, infrastructure may be more vulnerable to the cold this time because of the last one," Lamb said. "Certainly, you want to make sure your pipes are insulated in your own house."
Lamb said the threat of winter precipitation will end Tuesday, and below-freezing temperatures will remain through Wednesday. Temperatures will begin to rise on Thursday and reach the low 60s by the weekend.
