ACCORDING to Tom Cooper of Durham (HAS, Jan 8) I have definitely missed a headline in regard to Brexit.

If I understand Tom correctly he is saying that the UK has already signed up to a free trade agreement which also means free movement of people.

If that is what the EU is offering I would have assumed that the monetary offer by the UK would have been withdrawn and regretfully will fall under the headline ‘no deal is better than a bad deal’.

Surely giving the EU £39bn will have fulfilled our responsibilities to them thus allowing friendly trade negotiations to continue.

The EU will also be very much aware that the UK has quite a sizeable trade deficit with Europe.

Europeans will continue to be welcomed into the UK.

They should, however, have employment to come to and should be subject, as far as possible, to a security check.

They should also be able to support themselves although I appreciate some may need a little assistance while settling in.

If their employment didn’t last, deliberately on their part, their position in the UK would have to be reviewed. It is just part of taking back control.
