A barn that was home to some family pets caught fire on Stonecrest Road in rural west Ottawa Monday morning.
Firefighters got a call from a neighbour to the barn, which also held bales of hay, just before 5 a.m.
Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Danielle Cardinal said a few sheep, goats, a cat and a horse living in the barn were all killed.
One cat managed to escape, said district chief Todd Horricks.

The fire was out as of 7:30 a.m., said Cardinal, with firefighters checking for hot spots and staying warm in OC Transpo buses.
