Wrestling teams from Elmira and Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville will head into this week’s Section 4 dual meet tournaments as No. 1 seeds.
Elmira (5-0) is the team to beat in the Section 4 Division I Tournament, which will be held Wednesday at Vestal. The Express will oppose fourth-seeded Chenango Forks (3-3) and second-seeded Horseheads (12-1) will face No. 3 Newark Valley (5-0) in the 6 p.m. semifinals. The championship match will follow.
The Section 4 Division II Tournament will go through three rounds to determine a champion. Wrestling begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Afton.
It’ll open with third-seeded Spencer-Van Etten/Candor (7-4) facing No. 6 Windsor (7-3) and fourth-seeded Norwich (10-2) against No. 5 Walton/Delhi (7-2).
The SVEC/Windsor winner will get No. 2 Tioga (10-2) in one semifinal. BGAH (12-1) will face Norwich or Walton/Delhi in the other.
The Section 4 winners will move on to the first New York State Public High School Athletic Association Dual Meet Tournament on Jan. 27 at Onondaga Community College.
Last weekend, three Norwich wrestlers placed in the top eight in the Eastern States Classic at Sullivan County Community College.
Arguably the toughest tournament in the state, Dante Geislinger placed fourth at 99 pounds, Ty Rifanburg was seventh at 170 and Brennan Slater finished eighth at 182.
Among area wrestlers, Newark Valley 285-pounder Trentyn Rupert had the best finish, taking third. Walton/Delhi’s Bailey Wood placed seventh in the same weight class.
