Goodbye Ambassador! Delhi civic body staffers to travel in e-sedan soon

| | New Delhi

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will soon bid goodbye to iconic Ambassador cars used for years to commute its officials. Now, the NDMC has decided that its officials will commute to work in electric sedans.

However, the replacement would be made in a phase-wise manner and for the first phase 80 electric sedans will be procured. The sedans can be driven up to 140 km at a time and can run up to the speed of 100 km per hour.

“The officials travelling by Ambassador cars will soon be given e-sedans for commuting to work,” said a senior NDMC official. For which, it will be signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) under the Power Ministry. “In the first phase, 80 electrically-run sedans will be procured by the Ministry. The e-sedans will cost around Rs 10 lakh each, which the civic body will have to purchase from the company under the Ministry at a subsidised rate,” said the official.

The classic Ambassador cars, once considered as a mark of official authority was widely used by bureaucrats and Ministers, however, it has systematically being replaced by swanky sedans and SUVs gradually. Many Ministries and departments have already replaced Ambassador cars and the NDMC is apparently following suit.

Electric Sedans are modern vehicles which run on electric charge rather than petroleum fuels. The e-sedans are increasingly becoming popular in European countries where people are switching over to e-sedan, which is considered environmental friendly and efficient at same time.

However, e-sedans are to be charged and for which charging stations have been developed at different areas, including Shivaji Stadium and Palika Kendra.
