DETROIT -- The Honda Accord, a midsize car that underwent a revision that has critics raving, was named Monday to the auto industry's most highly sought honor, North American Car of the Year, at the North American International Auto Show here.

The Lincoln Navigator won Truck of the Year and the Volvo XC60 is SUV of the Year. The Navigator is also an SUV, but in a year in which there were no new strong competitors among pickups, it won.

Though the Accord has been around for decades, it's a new breed that caught the attention of the judges, auto critics from around the nation.

The new, 10th generation Accord’s sleek lines promise an involving and enjoyable driving experience, while also enclosing accommodating and comfortable passenger compartment and the biggest trunk in a segment crowded with excellent cars like the Chevy Malibu, Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry and VW Passat.

The 2018 Accord is built on a lighter, stiffer platform that contributes to high fuel efficiency and nimble handling.
