Italy’s Open Fiber and regional energy and water utility Acea have announced the details of their agreement to roll out fibre-optic cables in Rome, confirming earlier reports. In a statement the companies said they intend to bring FTTH services at speeds of up to 1 Gbps to 1.2 million of the capital’s homes using Acea’s infrastructure by 2022. Open Fiber will finally invest some EUR 350 million in the project compared to Acea’s EUR 25 million, with as many as 1,500 jobs created over the five-year duration of the work.
Acea also has the option to set up a majority-owned venture for the development of ‘smart city’ projects in the capital such as IoT-based public lighting services.
