NORWICH - Norwich police are investigating a stabbing incident they say resulted in a 21-year-old man hospitalized with serious injuries Sunday night in downtown Norwich.

At 8:17 p.m., police and emergency crews were dispatched to the area of Franklin Street at Willow Street for an assault victim, police said in a press release early Monday.

Police said in the release that a female 911 caller was driving through the area and reported she located a man who may have been shot and stabbed.

Upon arriving to the scene, police said officers found a male 21-year-old victim on the sidewalk at 99 Franklin Street.

Police say the victim had sustained numerous stab wounds to his body and head.

The victim has not been identified by police.

Police secured the scene and the victim was transported to the William W. Backus Hospital by American Ambulance, where he was treated, the release said.

The victim is currently listed in serious but stable condition, police said.

Norwich Police Department’s Patrol Division, American Ambulance and the Norwich Fire Department responded to the scene, according to the release.

Norwich Police Detectives responded, processed the scene and collected evidence, the release said, and detectives are working to identify the suspect or suspects responsible, the release said.

Police say evidence found at the scene indicates the stabbing assault happened at 8:15 p.m. in the area of 77 and 88 Chestnut Street and the victim walked to Franklin Street, where the passing motorist found him.
