In addition to policing duties, the Kannur Town police station will also serve as a clinic for children on Sundays with the support of paediatricians volunteering to join the police in their initiative to script a people-friendly image.
The initiative was inaugurated by Ports Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran on January 14.
With this, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sundays, the station premises will turn a place of relief for parents in the area who are distressed by the unavailability of paediatricians on Sundays.
With IAP support
“The idea of a child clinic has been thought of because of the difficulty in finding outpatient (OP) clinics for children on Sundays,” said Town station Circle Inspector T.K. Ratnakumar. He said the clinic, run with the support of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP), would have a panel of 14 paediatricians offering free service.
The station already had a child-friendly unit started as part of the community policing initiative, he told The Hindu.
On January 14, the service was started even before its formal inauguration as a couple reached the station with their child in need of OP check-up.
Child-friendly unit
The child-friendly unit has a child-friendly ambience with paintings of cartoon characters on the walls. The unit was started to make the station approachable to children and to offer awareness programmes for them.
