Students jumped over the University of South Africa (Unisa) gates out of desperation to register and apply at the Sunnyside campus. This comes after they had patiently waited for campus security to open the gates but hours later, gates were still closed.

Out of frustration, students started jumping over the gates; letting themselves in the university premises.

Looking at their male counterparts climbing the gates, the ladies soon followed suit.

Voicing their frustration, the group said they had been queuing since 4am and did not receive the treatment they wanted.

“We first had to deal with the South African Student Congress (Sasco) members who initially refused to let us queue and when we thought we had solved that we had to deal with the management that didn't not want to let us in,” said a group of ladies complaining from the front of the queue.

They claimed to have been at the university since before sunrise and did not expect to still be outside the gates by 9:30.

While in the queue, a group of women with children accompanied by members of Sasco made their way to the front of the queue, but those already queuing did not have any of it. They told the ladies to go queue at the back of the line.

“There will not be any special treatment here, we also have children, in fact we have newborn babies but we left them home. Those children are old enough to go to crèche but you decided to bring them here, go to the back of the line like everyone else,” said Kefilwe Monkgake.

The 24-year-old from Ga-Rankuwa said she arrived at the university around 4am and was not willing to let anyone cut in front of her even if they are pregnant women.
