Arvada police shot and killed a man who fled from them in a shopping mall parking lot Sunday night after the police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle.

The man died west of Kipling Street near Interstate 70, Arvada Police Detective David Snelling said.

No police officers were hurt.

The Jefferson County district attorney and other investigators were looking into what happened.

No information was available identifying the man killed, Snelling said. No information was available about the number of shots fired.

Arvada police received a call around 5:27 p.m. notifying them of “a suspicious vehicle or person in that area” and approached the vehicle in the parking lot on the 5000 block of Kipling Street. The officers received information the man was wanted on a felony warrant, which warned he was “armed and dangerous,” Snelling said.

No information was available on the basis for the warrant.

“The person in the vehicle fled the scene. He first drove away in the vehicle. Then he fled on foot. He was near the I-70 frontage road west of Kipling,” Snelling said.

Police confronted him.

“They came into contact with him,” he said. “Shots were fired. Officers did fire shots. We don’t know if the suspect fired shots. We have reports the suspect was armed. We are trying to confirm that.”
