Snow-covered roads could make for slow commutes Monday and possibly into Tuesday morning, and the City of Milwaukee is putting parking restrictions in place.

The National Weather Service is forecasting light accumulating snow across the state. The snow is predicted to begin around 8 p.m. Sunday in Milwaukee and could last until Tuesday morning.

The weather service issued a winter storm warning for the easternmost part of the state from Kenosha County up through Door County. It also issued a winter weather advisory for all of southern Wisconsin through Tuesday morning.

The forecast predicts snow accumulation of up to 9 inches of light, powdery flakes in Milwaukee. Areas closer to Lake Michigan are expected to get the most snow. The Madison area will get between 4 and 5 inches, the weather service predicts.

"Prepare for the possibility of slick and snow-covered roadways and slower commute times for tonight into Monday night," the advisory said.

With the storm bearing down, the City of Milwaukee declared overnight, alternate-side parking restrictions for Sunday and Monday night to help drivers of snowplows and salt trucks clear the streets.

Residents must park on the even-numbered side of the street from 11 p.m. Sunday through 6 a.m. Monday. On Monday, vehicles must be moved to the odd-numbered side from 11 p.m. through 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Two exceptions: If a street has posted signs governing parking, follow the instructions on the signs. Also, no parking at all is allowed on main thoroughfares or bus routes from Dec. 1 until March 1.

The fine for violations is now $40, up from $22 last winter.

One hundred twenty-one pieces of snow-clearing equipment were to be fielded Sunday night, with about 160 workers on duty, said Laura Daniels, director of operations for the Department of Public Works.

Temperatures in the teens and low 20s are expected for the next few days.
