Police are responding to reports of a man with gunshot wounds in Lower Hutt.

They have closed in on Pharazyn Street in Melling.

Police say a firearm has been recovered and there is not considered to be any ongoing risk to the public.

They say the victim has been taken to hospital and his injury is not life threatening.
