Chatardighi Union Parishad (UP) chairman has felled 260 trees beside a canal in Singra upazila illegally.
In 2003, local people planted around 400 trees beside Panaullah canal under the supervision of the forest office, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sandip Kumar Sarker.
Recently, UP Chairman Altaf Hossain Akhonda felled the trees without taking any permission from the upazila forest and environment development committee, said the UNO.
They are investigating the matter, he said.
Contacted, the chairman said he felled 160 trees after a resolution was passed by the union parishad committee and sold them at Tk 85,000.
Idrish Ali, a resident of Eklaspur Ekdala village, said the UP chairman sold the trees at Tk 85 thousand while the value of the trees was around Tk 10 lakh.
