MORENCI — A national Wiffle ball tournament that came to Morenci last year for the first time is planning to return this summer.
The Morenci City Council on Monday approved a request from the National Wiffle League Association to use Wakefield Park for its national tournament July 11-15.
The tournament is a 16-team event featuring teams from across the United States, city administrator Michael Sessions said. To qualify for the tournament, teams must emerge from a regional event that is held at other locations across the country. Morenci hosted a regional event two years ago.
Sessions presented the paperwork request to the council to act on at its discretion. Because Sessions is a member of the tournament host committee and has interest in the event, he refrained from making a recommendation for a council vote.
The National Wiffle League Association moved its national tournament from Dublin, Ohio, to Morenci.
The annual three-day tournament began in 2012 with the purpose of crowning the best Wiffle ball team in the country.
