Veterans Cup at Ashley

Laney had four individual champions en route to a team title at the 12-team tournament.

Seth Thomas claimed a 10-5 decision at 120 pounds to begin a string of three consecutive Laney winners.

Conner Johnson won by injury default at 126 and Marcus Mondragon earned a first period pin at 132. Cael Willis was the other Buccaneer to win, registering a pin in 1:33 at 195.

Other local winners were: North Brunswick's Bradley Hamilton (145), Hoggard's Alec Sampson (160) and North Brunswick's Bryan Aragao (182).

Laney finished with 188 points. Lumberton (155.5), North Brunswick (137.5), SW Onslow (133) and Ashley (123) rounded out the top five.

Boneyard Bash at Jack Britt

West Brunswick senior Jacary Bethel remained unbeaten, claiming the 170-pound title with an 11-10 decision over Terry Sanford's Ferris Allen.

Lincoln Smith, who picked up his 100th career victory on Friday, placed third at 160. Matthew Smith was fourth at 106.

Three Trojans -- Gavin Bipes (126), Brandon Reisen (138) and Jeremiah Daily (152) -- placed fifth to help the team earn a sixth-place finish.

Jolly Roger Invitational at Corinth Holders

Zain Tittle earned an 8-6 decision to claim the 145-pound title and five other South Brunswick wrestlers placed to help the team finish fourth out of 21 teams.

Topsail's Nathan Bray was the only other area champion. He earned a 9-2 decision at 113.

Teammates Ethan Rivenbark (120) and Noah LaValle (182) both finished second to guide the Pirates to a ninth-place finish in the team standings.

South Brunswick's other placers were: Wyatt Beatini (third at 126), Bender Sanderson (third at 132), Jalen Parker (third at 138), Eyan Thomas (fourth at 22) and Brandon Vaught (third at 285).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Northern Durham 81, New Hanover 59

The Knights pulled away with 24 points in both the second and third quarters in the third game of the HighSchoolOT Garner Showcase.

Senior point guard Freddie Taylor led New Hanover (11-3) with 13 points. He was joined in double figures by Ramello Williams (11), Tyler Steinman (10) and Hayden Edgar (10).

The Wildcats shot only 32 percent (17 of 54) from the field, while North Durham (10-2) finished at 49 percent (28 of 57).

Wake Forest Homeschool 66, Southeastern Homeschool 55

After shooting 50 percent (13 of 26) in the opening half, the Cardinals made only 8 of 30 shots in the second half to suffer a road defeat.

Junior Noah Sibbett scored 18 points, finishing 7 of 11 from the field. He hit 4 of 8 3-pointers. Josh Moyers added nine points and Philip Strickland added eight for Southeastern Homeschool (5-11, 3-8).
