Seacoast Roundup: UNH gymnasts fall to Bridgeport

DURHAM — Sophomore Ava Watkins won the floor exercise with a score of 9.825 in her first collegiate floor performance as the University of New Hampshire gymnastics team was defeated by Bridgeport (192.950-191.750) at Lundholm Gym on Saturday.

UNH had the top three performers on vault and recorded a team score of 48.835. Senior Marissa Toci and junior Nicole O’Leary led the team and finished first in the meet as they each registered a 9.800. Lauren Diggan finished in third place with a career-high 9.775.

Diggan recorded a meet-high 9.825 on uneven bars, which was also her career-high. Junior Danielle Doolin finished with a 9.725 as the Wildcats recorded a team score of 47.425.

Senior co-captain Casey Lauter recorded a 9.875 on balance beam, the highest score in any event during the meet. Senior Lia Breeden notched a 9.800, which helped the Wildcats record a 47.750.

The Wildcats held the top three performers on floor en route to a team score of 47.750. Watkins led the way with a 9.825. Breeden finished second with a 9.800 and O’Leary came in third with a 9.775.

WOMEN'S COLLEGE HOCKEY

UConn 3, UNH 1

DURHAM – University of New Hampshire sophomore forward Taylor Wenczkowski of Rochester scored a power play goal in the third period, but the Wildcats fell to the University of Connecticut Huskies on Saturday afternoon.

Wenczkowski was assisted by fellow sophomores Nicole Dunbar and Tori Howran 13:52 into the third period on the power play, to give the Wildcats their first goal of the game.

A total of 17 penalties were called in the game; UNH was 1-6 on the power play, while killing off every UConn power play.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Marshwood 35, York 27

YORK, Maine — The Marshwood High School girls basketball team outscored York 10-0 in the third quarter on its way to a Class A South victory on Saturday afternoon.

Marshwood improved to 11-0, while the Wildcats dropped to 5-5.

York carried a 10-9 lead into halftime, before the Hawks shutout in the third.

Miranda Montgomery led Marshwood with 17 points, while Nina Howe netted 13 of her game high 18 points for York in the fourth.

Marshwood travels to Class AA Bonny Eagle on Monday, while York hosts Morse.

Farmington 50, Mascenic 28

FARMINGTON — The Tigers used a 19-2 surge in the third quarter to pull away and beat Mascenic Saturday afternoon in Division IV.

Unbeaten Farmington improved to 5-0, while Mascenic dropped to 4-2. The Tigers and Littleton (7-0) are the only two undefeated teams left in D-IV.

Katie Martineau led Farmington with 14 points and seven assists, while Chloe Weeks added 12 points and eight rebounds. Tatyana Long had nine points and four rebounds, Erryn Ebare chipped in with six points and three boards, and Cynthia Langley had five points and three rebounds.

The Tigers visit Portsmouth Christian Wednesday.

BOYS HOCKEY

Keene 6, Oyster River 4

KEENE — The Bobcats lost their second straight in Division II, falling on the road to the Blackbirds.

OR (3-2) trailed 2-1 after the first period and 4-3 after two stops, although the Bobcats led 3-2 at one point in the second.

Sam Davies scored twice for OR, while Declan Daubney and Eric Donovan also scored. Ben Caron had two assists. Max Carpenter and Wyatt Carlson had one apiece. Nick Milano made 13 saves in goal.

The Bobcats visit Portsmouth/Newmarket Wednesday in Dover.
