The Raiders have already brought back one former head coach. Now Jon Gruden is reportedly bringing back a second.
According to Michael Lombardi and the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Raiders are set to hire Tom Cable as offensive line coach. Cable had been the Seahawks’ offensive line coach and assistant head coach from 2011 until Wednesday, when he was fired.
Cable previously coached the Raiders’ offensive line in 2007 and was promoted to interim head coach four games into the 2008 season after then-owner Al Davis fired Lane Kiffin. Cable stayed head coach through the 2010 season and compiled a 17-27 record before being fired.
Cable’s tenure included allegations of physical abuse. At training camp in 2009, defensive assistant Randy Hanson sustained a broken jaw and accused Cable of assault. Napa police did not press charges.
In November 2009, ESPN reported that two women had accused Cable of physical abuse. The NFL did not punish Cable, but Davis cited the allegations at a news conference following Cable’s firing, saying he’d withheld pay from Cable during the 2010 season due to resulting litigation.
The Raiders finished 8-8 in Cable’s final season. He was replaced by Hue Jackson.
In Seattle, Cable reportedly doubled as the Seahawks’ running game coordinator. Marshawn Lynch had some of his best seasons running in Cable’s zone schemes.
Lynch did not mesh as quickly in his first season behind the Raiders’ highly paid offensive line in 2017. He finished with 891 yards, but he is not a lock to return next season.
The Seahawks fired Cable along with offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell after finishing 9-7 to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
