Jo Koy is on a mission to break the mold — but don’t expect him to get too political onstage even though he was raised by an immigrant mother.

In an era of Trump-isms, with the president tweeting comedic material almost hourly, Koy said he’s not taking the bait.

“I get involved in the political, but I don’t bring it to the stage because that’s not my style,” he said. “That’s never been my style. It’s not even what I listen to. I do enjoy Dennis Miller, I do enjoy Chris Rock when they do their political humor, but it’s never been my goal. ... I love relatable humor.”

And that relatable humor just happens to come in the form of hilarious anecdotes about growing up Filipino American, he told The Chronicle during a Facebook Live interview Friday, Jan. 12, before hitting the stage for his latest comedy tour, “Break the Mold.”

“Whatever I talk about on stage is just my story,” Koy said. “My fanbase is broad ... We all have the same mom, it’s just that our’s had an accent.”

“Break the Mold,” which he kicked off with six sold-out shows at the Warfield in San Francisco, moves on to Fresno, Santa Barbara, San Diego and Bakersfield, before returning to Northern California later this month for several nights at Stockton’s Bob Hope Theatre.
