A Community March to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day will take place beginning at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, at Old Town Square in downtown Fort Collins.
This year organizers are asking the community to "Rise Up, Take Action."
Participants will march to the Lory Student Center where there will be a musical performance and remarks from keynote speaker Rev. Jamie Washington, president of Washington Consulting Group, president and co-founder of the Social Justice Training Institute, and vice president of the American College Personnel Association.
They hope to inspire participants with a renewed sense of focus and purpose, specifically on how to disrupt oppressive systems daily.
To understand individual and collective responsibility, attendees will break into small groups to engage in conversation about topics that include affordable housing, the arts, interfaith coalition, education and food insecurity, as they relate to accessibility, equity and inclusion for all.
In partnership with Homeless Gear, needed items will be collected, including (trial sizes preferred) disposable razors, shaving cream, toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner and individual-sized, prepackaged, nonperishable snacks.
The main drop-off location is the Lory information desk (open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Jan. 14. On Jan. 15, people can bring items with them to the march.
