Americans are drowning in debt. More than 33 percent of the population has unpaid debt that has gone into collections, according to a recently released study by Urban Institute.
While 28 percent of New Jersey residents are in the same boat, some states have it much worse. In Louisiana, for example, almost half the population has unpaid debt that has gone into collections.
