Bryson R. 'Bud' Carter

GALLIPOLIS — Bryson R. "Bud" Carter, 78, Gallipolis, Ohio died Wednesday, January 10, 2018 after a valiant battle with a rare degenerative muscular disease, Inclusion Body Myositis.

He was born Dec. 21, 1939 at Quaker City, son of the late Samuel Boyd and Elizabeth I. (Reed) Carter. Bud married Mary Kathryn "Kay" James Sept. 8, 1962 at Parkersburg, West Virginia. Bud and Mary Kay spent over 53 years of marriage demonstrating teamwork in service to family, friends, community and to God before she passed June 4, 2016.

Bud received a Bachelors of Science of Agriculture Degree from Ohio State University in 1963 and a Master’s Degree from Ohio State University in 1973, where he also did post-graduate study toward a doctorate in Agriculture Economics. He served as a Gallia County Extension Agent in 4-H from 1963-1965 and as Agriculture Agent from 1965-1985. He then became a District Farm Management Specialist in 1986 until his retirement May 1, 1995. His memberships included: Ohio Cooperative Extension Agents Association; Alpha Gamma Sigma and Epsilon Sigma Phi; Gallia County Farm Bureau; Ohio State University Retirees Association; J. I. Case Collectors Association, Inc; The American Radio Relay League; The Ohio Valley Amateur Radio Club and he served as a part-time A.B.L.E. Instructor at Buckeye Hills Career Center, Rio Grande, Ohio. In retirement he enjoyed restoring a 1939 Case tractor and plow from the family farm which he then displayed in many parades. Bud and Mary Kay were cat lovers which led to generous support of the Spay and Neuter Assistance Program of Gallia County.

Bud was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Gallipolis, where he served as head usher, Senior High Sunday School Teacher, founding member and President of the God Squad, and was instrumental in founding "The Cellar Program" for youth ministry in 1980. He also served on the Bossard Memorial Library Board.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his son, Kevin Scott Carter, and daughter, Stephanie (Erik) Kelley; three grandchildren: Derek Diaz Carter, Carter Erik Kelley and Kathryn Stephanie Kelley; sister, Ann (Don) Simeral, Quaker City; as well as a host of adoring nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jerroll Carter.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon Monday, Jan. 15, in Grace United Methodist Church, Gallipolis, with Rev. Bob Powell, officiating. Burial will follow in Mound Hill Cemetery, Gallipolis. Friends and family may call at the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, Gallipolis Sunday from 4-6 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church Monday.
