Akanji has attracted interest from big clubs after an impressive first half of the season, which included a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Champions League.

And United were understood to have been one of the sides keen on the 22-year-old along with Liverpool and Southampton.

But it appears the Premier League will miss out on the Swiss international with Borussia Dortmund reportedly closing in on a deal.

The German side have had a disappointing season, especially in defence, with 24 goals conceded as they sit 16 points off leaders Bayern Munich.

According to German outlet Kicker, Akanji is in advanced negotiations with Dortmund.

The transfer fee is expected to be around £17.7million (20m euros) with add ons.

It is claimed United are still in the chase for Akanji but time is running out to beat Dortmund.

Last year, Akanji was quoted as saying he dreams of joining United one day.

He said: "I want to stay healthy, go with Switzerland to the World Cup, and someday play for Manchester United.”

Central defence is among the areas United boss Jose Mourinho wants to improve with Eric Bailly injured and Victor Lindelof struggling to convince at times.
