DHAKA: The government has formed a new wage board to revise the minimum pay for the country’s garment industry workers.
State minister for Labor and Employment Mujibul Huq Chunnu made the announcement in a press conference at secretariat on Sunday (January 14).
Labor and Employment Ministry has formed the board comprising four permanent members along with the president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and a representative of the workers.
State minister Mujibul Huq said the committee will submit a report with recommendation within six months after scrutinizing the garment workers’ salary structure. The government will finalize the new salary then.
Many workers’ association and workers of the garment sector have been calling for a new wage board in recent days. According to Labor Law, the last wage board for this sector’s workers was announced in 2013.
As per rules, the government can review the wage board within three years and make assessment in five years, Mujibul huq said.
Mentioning that the Prime Minister is very respectful towards all workers, he said, “We hope to form a new wage board for the workers within December this year when the term of the last wage board will be over.”
