Events

Park vehicle passes are required for all events at North Dakota and Minnesota state parks. Vehicle passes are $7 daily and $35 annually in both states.

• March 3: Northland Fat Bike Rally, Lake Bemidji State Park. This is the only time during the winter that park trails will be open for fat biking. Sponsored by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; participants will learn about ice safety, the tradition of darkhouse spearfishing and required gear. In addition, there will be time spent on the ice for spearfishing with a mentor. Registration is limited to 18 participants, with a minimum age of 12. Birding

• May 16-19: Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds, various sites in northwest Minnesota near Detroit Lakes, Minn. Tours of Hamden Slough and Tamarac national wildlife refuges are part of this year's 21st annual festival. Noah Stryker, who set a world record in 2015 by seeing 6,042 birds, more than half the birds on earth, whiel traveling 41 countries and all seven continents, will be the festival's keynote speaker. Brad Dokken

Brad Dokken is a reporter and editor of the Herald's Sunday Northland Outdoors pages. Dokken joined the Herald company in November 1985 as a copy editor for Agweek magazine and joined the Herald staff in 1989.
