Coal India is a state-controlled coal mining company. It is the largest coal producer in the world. Founded in 1975, it produces over 84 per cent of coal in India. Operating through 82 mining areas, CIL is an apex body with seven wholly-owned coal producing subsidiaries and one mine planning and consultancy company spread over eight provincial states of India. CIL also fully owns a mining company in Mozambique called 'Coal India Africana Limitada'.
Key success factors
CIL provides coal to 98 out of 101 coal-based thermal power plants in India. The company accounts for 76 per cent of total thermal power generating capacity of the utility sector. It was granted the Maharatna status in April 2011 .
Performance highlights
For previous three consecutive years CIL has bagged 'Excellent' rating in its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) - a negotiated contract between Government and CIL Management - for performance evaluation on key physical and financial parameters. The company, for the first time, crossed the threshold of half-a-billion tonne marks both in coal off-take and production in 2015-16. It produced 554.14 MT of coal in 2016-17, both coking and non-coking coal categories put together, with non-coking coal having a share of 499.49 MT.
Two of the company's subsidiary companies viz. South Eastern Coalfields and Mahanadi Coalfields, entered the elite club of 100-MT coal producing companies.
CIL is pursuing initiatives for acquiring metallurgical and high CV thermal coal assets abroad to enhance the energy security of the country. The strategic intent is to acquire, explore, develop and operate the coal blocks/mines and import the produces to India.
Reserves & Resources
As of April 1, 2010, CIL had total coal resources of 64,786 million tonne, comprising, pursuant of ISP classifications, Proved Geological Reserves of 52,546 MT, Indicated Geological Reserves of 10,298 MT and Inferred Geological Reserves of 1,942 MT. As of April 1, 2010, from our total coal resources of 64,786 MT, 30,356 MT had been considered for mining studies (mine planning and feasibility studies), and the remaining coal resources of 34,430 MT had not yet been considered for such mining studies. From the 30,356 MT of coal resources that had been considered for mining studies as of April 1, 2010, 21,754 million tonne has been estimated as CIL's Extractable Reserves.
